Real-Time Payments: When 'Next Business Day' Becomes 'Next Few Seconds'
We've now covered the courier (wires, in our MT103 post) and the mail truck (ACH, in our last two posts). Both have a catch: the courier is fast but expensive, and the mail truck is cheap but slow, and neither one runs on weekends or holidays. Real-time payments are the newest option, built to close that gap: instant, cheap, and always open.
The problem real-time payments solve
Real world example: it's 9pm on a Saturday and you need to pay a plumber who just fixed your burst pipe. A wire is overkill and your bank isn't even open to send one. ACH won't land until sometime Monday or Tuesday. Neither option actually works for "I need to pay you right now."
Real-time payments exist for exactly this. Instead of "next business day" or "whenever the bank is open," the money moves, and is confirmed as received, in a few seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including holidays.
The two US rails: FedNow and RTP
In the US, there are two real-time payment systems running side by side:
- RTP, run by a bank owned group called The Clearing House, has been live since 2017.
- FedNow, run by the Federal Reserve itself, launched more recently, in 2023.
They compete, but a lot of banks actually connect to both, so as a customer you generally don't need to know or care which one your bank uses. As of 2026, both systems allow transfers up to $10 million, and together they reach the large majority of US bank accounts.
The important part isn't the rivalry, it's what they have in common: both were built from the ground up on ISO 20022, the same modern message format we've talked about in earlier posts. That's different from wires and ACH, which are older formats that are gradually being translated into ISO 20022. Real-time payments never had an old format to begin with, they started with the new one.
What makes it actually "real time"
Two things separate this from a fast version of ACH:
- It's always open. No cutoff times, no waiting for the next batch, no "the bank is closed today." It runs every second of every day, including Christmas.
- It's final, and it's confirmed instantly. With a wire, you send it and hope it arrives. With ACH, you wait, and there's a window where it could bounce back. With real-time payments, you get a "yes, received" confirmation within seconds, and once that confirmation comes back, it's done, no reversal window like ACH has.
Canada is catching up, natively
Canada doesn't have a live real-time system yet the way the US does, but it's close. Payments Canada has been building the Real-Time Rail (RTR), and as of this writing it's set to launch in phases starting in the last quarter of 2026, with wider availability rolling out through 2027.
What's worth noting: the RTR is being built on ISO 20022 from day one too, just like FedNow and RTP. So once it's live, all three of the major rails we've talked about in this series, US real-time payments, and eventually Canada's, will speak the same modern message format natively, no translation needed.

Where this series leaves off
We started with a simple question, how does money actually move, and worked through wires, US ACH, Canada's EFT, and now real-time rails. The theme underneath all of it is the same: every country and every generation of payment technology solved "how do I move money" a little differently, and ISO 20022 is slowly becoming the common language that ties all of those different answers together.
